IB Psychology TSP + eBook Bundle (All Chapters)

I taught IB Psych for a year using a myriad of other resources and built a course myself. While rewarding, it was exhausting and there are still a lot of subjects I regret not covering and connections to real life I wish I'd made. For my second year, I decided to use Them Ed's resources and plans, and it was a godsend. Some lessons I teach now are fully Them Ed, some are a hybrid including my own content. Them Ed's plans and resources are great because they are flexible yet solid foundations that you can build on if you feel the need.

By far, the most valuable resources are those built around building the knack of IB examination writing. I'm astounded by how easily my latest 1st year students have managed to begin writing quality answers in comparison to my students last year. I find that the rubrics and plans also reduce my workload significantly, making it easier to grade exams/papers and make scheme of work informed with IB values and ATL skills. There is also a great community on the Them Ed Facebook group for Teachers that has valuable resources and guidance.

The course has also let me connect students who are deeply interested in sociology and criminology to Psychology, and this had led to my class having a waitlist! The thematic approach is just so much more engaging and enriching than the linear format. I feel like these resources will become core resources to the subject. The Teacher Support Pack has been a life saver. This is my first year teaching IB Psychology and the TSP has allowed me to focus on learning the content rather than creating powerpoints and guided notes. Prior to discovering this framework, I had been teaching IB Psychology in a linear way. Every unit would be based on an approach and we would cover the topics and research therein. While it seemed effective and the students were scoring relatively well, I could not shake the feeling that there was a better way.

When I discovered the Themantic Model, I realized the missing piece, focus on applicability. By teaching thematically, we can then focus on how these concepts apply in the real world and thus make them more interesting for our students. For example, teaching students the concepts of neurobiology can be interesting in and of itself, but if we can relate it back to a specific field, such as criminology, then it becomes more interesting and students are able to make better connections to the content. This teacher support pack provides all of the materials to do just that, teach psychology from a thematic approach rather than linear.

I've known about this course for a few years but was a too scared to take the risk. I had been teaching in quite a linear way, and I thought the Themantic approach might have confused the students.

I was wrong. Very wrong!

The way this course is structured takes a very complicated and challenging curriculum and strips it down to its bare essentials, without dumbing anything down. It is structured in a way that builds on knowledge gained - lesson by lesson, page by page, activity by activity, with frequent mini-assessments to help teachers check for understanding. I've found that students are able to use psychological terminology accurately within weeks.

The PowerPoints, group activities, workbooks, unit plans, and lesson plans - all excellent. The real beauty though is the textbook. It is expertly written using straightforward language to explain difficult concepts, and very obviously written by someone who has experience working with additional language learners. Topics are covered in full within several pages, rather than an entire chapter of densely-written jargon.

Selfishly, I have to say that although I always enjoyed teaching IB Psychology, I never realised just how enjoyable it could be. The course content sparks rich and fascinating discussions, for which I'm mostly a passenger. I find that the classes whizz by, and with my grade 11 students overloaded with work they are hugely appreciative when I tell them their reading homework is only a few pages long!
